Have you ever heard of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Spiderman? These are only some of the famous superheroes. Superheroes have been around for almost 80 years! The first was Superman. He was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and his first comic was in 1938. They wanted to create a symbol of hope during a rough time. There were many wars and a lot of crime. Superman had to be a person who could give people confidence and bravery. He needed to show that people can be just like him (without the powers). Superman eventually became a great success and becomes more and more popular as the years go by.
Soon, other people created heroes like Captain America, Human Torch, and Batman. Batman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1939. He is darker than Superman, but more realistic. I won’t repeat the origin because everyone knows, but he resonates with people as others do. He also became popular, which started the question: Batman or Superman? One has powers, and one does not. I personally prefer Batman, but I think it depends on people’s beliefs and personalities. As the years went on, more and more people started creating superheroes. Wonder Woman was created. Why can’t there be female heroes? She showed they can be awesome too. She is revolutionary, and needed in society.
In 1961 Marvel Comics created the Fantastic Four. Then the Hulk. Then Thor. Then Iron Man. But 1 character stuck out: Spiderman. He is only a teenager, yet he is so powerful. He had real problems, and was a real character. Marvel had created characters that have emotions, like real people. They showed that this can be done. Spiderman is the best example of that. This started a rivalry between Marvel and DC. They went through a lot of different comics and character changes over the years. Some were for the better, some for the worse. They had superhero teams like the Justice League, or the Avengers.
In 1978, Superman: The Movie was made. This started a whole new craze for Superhero movies. People realized they could be good. The 90’s were not a very good time for superhero movies, because a lot of them were bad. People gave up on them and moved on. But in 2005, Batman Begins was released. It had new themes that were different from other superhero movies like grit, drama, and realism. This movie was so good, that it revived everything! It had a sequel (The Dark Knight) which is arguably the best one yet. It had great performances and a great story that no superhero movie has topped yet. Then Iron Man came along. It was also a fantastic movie and started a “Universe.” This spawned The Avengers (Movie), which was the first movie with multiple superheroes that were built up from other movies. It was great and very enjoyable. Then sequels came, and new movies, and more, until there are about 4 superhero movies a year!
Superheroes inspire people. They entertain people. They are great characters that everyone can enjoy, there are so many now, that everybody can find one they like the most. There is no place in the world where they don’t know who Superman is, and that is an astounding thing.
